Southern Africa, particularly Bophutaswana continues to hold MPS interest. Mrs Chalker is due to address Conservative backbenchers, of whom over 150 have now signed Andrew Hunter's EDM on Bophut aswana, on 17 May. A recent backbench meeting saw correspondents Michael Buerk and Ian Hargreaves subjected to severe criticism of their coverage of events in South Africa.

2. The visit of the Chinese delegation of the IPU went very well. Some delegates did not however take kindly to questions from some Opposition members on human rights and Hong Kong.

There is currently no Parliamentary pressure for an early debate on Hong Kong, although the Opposition appear to be under the impression that one will take place before the summer recess. The Opposition frontbench should be informed at an early stage of any decision on whether or not the Government is prepared to make time available.

4. In response to pressure from Frank Judd of Oxfam, particularly with regard to Cambodia, there is a possibility that the Opposition may press for a half- day debate on aid. generally agreed this would be a welcome move.

5. The date of the next meeting was set for 3.45pm Thursday 9 June in House of Commons Committee Room W4.
