The Hong Kong Government announced revised conditions of stay in April 1987 with aim of being fair to employers, foreign domestic helpers and local workers wishing to be part-time domestic helpers. These state that if a foreign domestic helper's contract is terminated, he or she will be allowed to stay in Hong Kong for the remainder of his or her six monthly period of stay, or for two weeks

after the termination of the contact, whichever is the shorter. (In special circumstances he/she may be able to change employer or stay in Hong Kong longer than the two weeks).

On 1 March this year the Philippine Government imposed a bad

on domestic workers going abroad to work. This was in response to

reports of bad treatment received in certain countries, and was

subject to guarantees as to safe working conditions from foreign

governments. Hong Kong has a good record and after negotiations the

bad was lifted with respect to Hong Kong on 16 March.

Visit of President Aquino to Hong Kong

President Aquino passed through Hong Kong on 16/17 April after

a visit to China. The main purpose of the visit was to meet members

of the large Filipino community in Hong Kong. There was also a

meeting with the Governor.
