SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT TO MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE AND BRUNEI, 4-11 APRIL 1988
1. The Secretary of State will visit Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei from 4-11 April. In Malaysia he will have talks with the Deputy Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, and the Minister for Trade and Industry. In Singapore, the Secretary of State will have talks with the First and Second Deputy Prime Ministers, the Foreign Minister, the Minister for Trade and Industry and possibly with the Prime Minister. In Brunei he will have an audience of the Sultan, and talks with the Foreign Minister.
2.
I should be grateful if departments would prepare briefs, according to the attached schedule, with the first-named Department acting as the lead Department.
3.
The General Briefs are intended to serve in all three countries to be visited. Where there are specific points to be made in one of the countries these should be indicated clearly. Briefs should be in the usual FCO format (example attached for non-FCO Departments), headed as for this minute, and in final form. Points to make and defensive points should be very concise and in the Secretary of State's preferred tiret form. I should be grateful if briefs (top copy plus nine) could reach Mr Dennis (Tel 270 2447), SEAD, E314 by 1730 on Monday 21 March.
