The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKDTC)

General

1.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council was established by Ordinance in 1966. Council members are appointed by the Governor. The Council is responsible for exploring markets for Hong Kong manufactured goods, promoting Hong Kong products and, more generally, creating a favourable image for Hong Kong as a trading partner and manufacturing centre. The Council's remit also includes facilitating imports into Hong Kong.

2. The Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council is The Hon Lydia Dunn, CBE, JP; the Executive Director is Mr Jack So.

3. The Council plan a programme of trade promotion projects locally and overseas each year in order to stimulate interest in Hong Kong products. Hong Kong's domestic exports have increased from HK$5,730 million in 1966 to HK$154,000 million in 1986. Overall trade in the same period grew from HK$17,660 million to HK$552,500 million.

4. The Council has 22 offices overseas (in Europe, North America, Central America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East). We have good relations with the London Office.

The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

5. In 1984 the Council decided to build the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It is a very ambitious venture and will be one of the largest centres in Asia. The entire complex will include two hotel, two auditoria, a conference and banqueting hall, two exhibition halls and 24 meeting rooms.

6. The foundation stone was laid at the Centre in October 1986 by Her Majesty The Queen during her visit to China and Hong Kong. The Centre is due to be completed towards the end of this year. It is hoped that Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales,
