Earlier this month you, Mr Andrews and Mr Jones attended a meeting to discuss possible overseas visits by Mr Maude over the next 12 months or so. As some points required clarification I have delayed recording the discussion until

now.

On the financial services side it was agreed that it would be useful for Mr Maude to visit the USA, the Far East and Australia. The US visit should be first and the best timing seemed to be a 1 or 2 week visit around the week beginning 16 May. Ideally this should take in Washington, New York and Chicago.

Mr

The Far East trip would probably take place in late September/October, but Mr Maude would need to liaise with Mr Clark who was also considering a visit around this time. Maude's trip would definitely take in Japan and Korea and possibly one or all of Taiwan, China and Hong Kong.

The timing of the Antipodean (Australia, New Zealand and possibly Singapore) trip was less certain but the possibility of early 1989 emerged as a front runner. Mr Maude was keen to discuss takeover practices whilst in Australia.

On the European front, you recommended that Mr Maude should visit Spain, and Portugal (2/3 day trip) and Greece (2 day trip) to discuss single market and financial servies issues. (The FT conference in Madrid early in May would tie-in with the Iberian visit).
