5. Aware of interest in relations with Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and
Hong Kong. But they should not be lumped together. All are very
different.
Hong Kong and Singapore are free traders. Korea and Taiwan are protectionist. We should concentrate our efforts on the latter. (If necessary: Hong Kong/US dollar link introduced to ensure stable financial framework at time of political uncertainty.
Overall trade remains effectively in balance. Hong Kong Government
have no intention of altering the link.)
6. Grateful for Japanese resettlement assistance for Vietnamese refugees in past. Hope you will be able to do more for Hong Kong in view of the increasing numbers of Vietnamese refugees awaiting
resettlement there.
7. Japanese contribution to debate on Indo-Chinese refugee problem
appreciated. Glad to be able to share views in meetings of Inter-Governmental Consultative Group (ICG). Note you are agreed
that resettlement is not the full answer. We are convinced that long-term solutions, including return under acceptable conditions, must be actively pursued. Look forward to continuing our co-operation with you on this matter.
