MR EGGAR'S VISITS TO THE CARIBBEAN AND BERMUDA

Visa Questions:

Passport Holders

Travel Restrictions on Bermudian BDTC

Points to make

[Defensive]

while it is undoubtedly inconvenient for Bermudians to

have to lodge visa applications in third countries, such

a requirement does not mean Bermudians cannot travel as

widely as they did pre-BNA 1981.

BDTC passport holders are entitled to full British consular protection and services when travelling or residing abroad and do not require an entry certificate

or visa to visit the UK.

an endorsement in BDTC passports showing returnability

to the UK (as part of a repatriation arrangement with Bermuda) would not be effective unless it formed part of a bilaterally

(or multilaterally) negotiated solution and there are good arguments against undertaking such an exercise now. (Action on Bermuda's behalf would risk opening up the general question of who qualifies under VAA and the end result would not

necessarily be in Bermuda's best overall interests).

އ

no objection to Bermuda making more informal arrangements with countries for its BDTC passport holders e g as they have done with the USA, where Bermudian BDTC passport holders have, unlike other British nationals, visa-free access.
