5. A similar meeting on Hong Kong had been extremely well attended. Discussion had been wide-ranging but did not include direct elections. It was noted that the forthcoming visit by the Dali Lama might provoke House of Commons interest in China and Hong Kong.

6.

Renewed interest in Gibraltar could also be expected given the outcome of the elections.

ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS

7. Both last week's event, the familiarisation visit by Conservative MPS and the desk officers briefing/reception, had been very successful. Mr Eggar had received many appreciative comments from MPs about the former.

8. The next event will be the visit by the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee (PITCOM) to the FCO on 26 April. This will comprise a presentation at midday followed by informal discussion over lunch. All members of the PLG were invited to attend; they should please let Nigel Dickerson (270 2231) know if they intend to do so.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING

9. The next meeting will be held at 4.45pm on Thursday 28 April, immediately following the Secretary of State's PQ meeting at 4pm.
