MINUTES OF THE PARLIAMENTARY LIAISON GROUP : 28 APRIL 1988

1.

There was a long discussion about the recent increase in the number of MPs travelling overseas on independently sponsored visits. The general conclusion was that the office should remain fully alert to the risks inherent in such visits, that the utmost caution was required in their handling but that any action on our part was likely, for various reasons, to be counterproductive. Every effort should, however, continue to be made to ensure that as many MPs as possible were briefed prior to departure and debriefed upon their return. Mr Bacon agreed to produce a paper explaining the procedures adopted by PRU to ensure this is done.

Because of continuing parliamentary interest in Bophutaswana it was decided that SAFD should be asked to provide a briefing paper on the subject for Mr Neubert and all PPSs.

Lord Glenarthur's recent targeted drinks session on Hong Kong had gone very well, most members had shown a good knowledge of the subject. Mr Eggar, whose session on Chile had unfortunately been interrupted by the division bell, indicated that he intended to hold another briefing party for MPs on his return from Latin America.

It was noted that Mr Bacon would be leaving shortly and that The Secretary of State will be holding a reception for him on 6 July.

The date of the next meeting was set for 3.45 pm, Monday 16 May, W3, House of Commons.
