During the early part of next year I shall be visiting the Prudential's businesses in Hong Kong (22nd to 25th January), Singapore (25th to 28th January) and Kuala Lumpur (29th January to 1st February). Madeleine will be coming with me and our local branch managers are making the necessary arrangements. There are however two points particularly relating to Hong Kong on which it would be very helpful to have your advice.
The Prudential's existing businesses in that part of the world are very largely insurance. We are however contemplating a considerable expansion mainly on the investment and financial services side and we have got a project team currently working on this in the hope that we can take decisions early next year. With that in mind it would be very helpful if I could have some official briefing about likely political and economic developments in Hong Kong before I depart. You may have written material readily available or I would gladly come and have a talk with the appropriate person.
The second point is more personal. While I am in Hong Kong I shall be seeing a Richard Margolis whom we might want to recruit (but I would not like this to become widely known) to play some part in our expansion there. He is of course a former member of the Diplomatic Service and from 1981 to 1986 was on secondment to the Hong Kong Government as Deputy Political Adviser. Is there any background or advice about him which you could give me either orally or in writing?
