Sir, we have heard about the shortage of

psychiatrists during the discussion on the Mental ·

(Amendment) Bill

Health!1987, but they appear to qualify for a

college. In this respect, can the Secretary

enlighten this Council what' the number of

paediatricians are there in Hong Kong, as compared

with that of psychiatrists?

Sir, I think that numbers are not relevant in the

sense that psychiatry is quite obviously a very

separate area of medicine. It is quite common

practice I believe in other countries for

paediatricians to come within the College of

Physicians, and for anaesthetists

within the province of surgery.

MRS. TAM:

Sir, when the tentative list of possible colleges

and specialty boards were set out in the interim

report, has the working party discussed with the

specialties which it intends to exclude as

qualifying for a college?

SECRETARY FOR HEALTH AND WELFARE:

Sir, the working party published the interim report

precisely in order to give all those concerned an

opportunity to express their views.
