to you on 4.12.87 is enclosed but this has yet to be verified. The Labour MPs were sympathetic with their cause but the Conservatives were more critical about the allegation that the UK Government has "broken promises" on democracy for Hong Kong and contended that this has yet to be proved. However all were alarmed by the emigration figures and the percentage drop in the acceptability of the Joint Declaration quoted by LEE and agreed that this is a matter that deserves parliamentary attention.

The public forum held at St Martin-in-the-Fields on 9.12.87 was attended by over 450 people, mainly Hong Kong students from London, Aberdeen, Cardiff, Sheffield, Birmingham, Manchester and various parts of the country and was the biggest gathering of Hong Kong people in the UK since the signing of the Joint Declaration. The nucleus responsible for organising this event is related to the Christian Fellowship and Catholic Students who provide an established network of contacts among the Hong Kong student population in the UK. It appears that this group will continue with similar activities in the run-up to the debates in the Parliament and the publication of the White Paper.
