Visit by Mr Zhao Damou, Deputy Secretary-General All-China Lawyers' Association
As I explained to you by telephone, I agreed to a request from the Law Society to receive a delegation including Mr Zhao Damou during their time in London on 24-29 January.
The Chinese team consisted of Mr Zhao Damou, Mrs Feng Xiumei (China International Lawyers' Exchange Center), Mr Tang Houzhi (China Council for Promotion of International Trade) and his wife Mrs Zhang Bingzi (University of International Business and Economics Beijing). Our discussion was quite informal, although a little slow in pace as far as Zhao Damou was concerned as he speaks no English (and I no Chinese). The others all spoke English well, especially Mr Tang Houzhi who is well-known in arbitration circles in London (indeed, he told me that he sits on arbitration panels with Lord Justice Kerr).
We did not discuss much of substance, but Zhao Damou did touch on Zou Yu's proposed visit to the UK. I gained the impression that Zou Yu would be coming as President of the ACLA, rather than as Minister of Justice. The Chinese let slip the remark that they could not be certain that Zou Yu would still be Minister of Justice in mid-1988, but this may be no more than an excess of caution on their part. Zhao Damou said that Zou Yu was looking forward very much to his visit and to seeing the Lord Chancellor.
I asked Zhao Damou to explain a little more the functions and membership of the ACLA. It appears that every lawyer in the
