OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT

Family Planning

Mr. Alex Carlile: To ask the Secretary of State for further Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assistance the Government intend to provide for family planning projects in developing countries.

Mr. Chris Patten: I am ready to consider requests for assistance with family planning activities from developing country Governments and non-governmental organisa- tions. The projects in India, Kenya and Pakistan listed in the answer which my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs gave the hon. Member for Birmingham, Hodge Hill (Mr. Davis) on 26 January at column 130 will include family planning activities.

In addition, subject to parliamentary approval, in 1988 we will contribute to the following multilateral organisa- tions working in family planning:

International Planned Parenthood Federation (ii) United Nations Fund for Population Activities (iii) World Health Organisation Special Programme

Mr. Wray: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will urgently consider aid to Nicaragua for the expansion of its education and health programmes.

Mr. Chris Patten: I am not proposing to provide additional Government-to-Government aid to Nicaragua at this time. The European Community provides substantial aid to central America, including Nicaragua.

Bophuthatswana

Rev. Martin Smyth: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what United Kingdom funds have been directed to projects in Bophuthatswana since 1977-78, expressed in cash terms. and real terms and as a percentage increase or decrease on the first year when such funds were so directed.

Mr. Chris Patten: The figures are as follows. Those for the period before 1982-83 are not readily available. The projects in question are all non-governmental ones.
