Grant Goodman was, I gather, criticised and apparently George Hicks. by some panel members for giving me the platform, for proposing Graham Johnson's participation and for cutting the discussion short at the end, the second session finished seven minutes before the appointed time. I may therefore have been unfair to him, despite his mischievous contributions.

Second postscript

I have also spoken to Bob Kapp of the Washington Council

Mr. Kapp was formerly with for International Trade in Seattle. the Washington China Relations Council, and is a Chinese linguist and long time student of Chinese and Hong Kong affiars. His view is that, despite any pretensions it may have, the Association of Asian Studies is not really all that important or influential in circles that matter to us.

Dr. Woo Chia-wei said to me this morning that his reading of current developments in Taiwan leads him to believe that Joanne Chang and others like her may well no longer be represen- He suggested that they may tative of official policy in Taiwan. rather be attempting to preserve their own personal positions and reputations, which have been based on a particular set of views which are in fact now out of date.
