I enclose some reports on the West Coast leg of Mr Lee's tour produced by the Hong Kong Government's representative in San Francisco. As one would expect, Mr Lee seems to have found some
But like-minded spirits in the West Coast academic community.
I understand from our Consul-General, Graham Burton, that the representative government issue, and Martin Lee's visit, have not attracted attention beyond the Hong Kong-watching community. Mr Burton adds that the general issue of Hong Kong post-1997 is raised with him increasingly often in the course of his rounds. That is not surprising given the size of the Hong Kong community there, and the investment/trade links. One more reminder of the differences between the two coasts in this country.
