M. WILDLIFE PRESERVATION IN HONG KONG
GENERAL
Hong Kong is party to Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. HKG take
responsibilities under convention very seriously.
Import, export and preservation of rare and endangered species of animals and plants are controlled by law in Hong Kong and their import for use as food is prohibited there.
Hong Kong authorities do all they can to control movement of rare species at border crossings as well as making spot checks at
markets and restaurants in Hong Kong.
REVIEW OF HKG EFFORTS
HKG currently reviewing their efforts to see whether they can be stepped up or made more effective. In this context, HKG already considering proposals to strengthen inspection in markets and
restaurants in Hong Kong.
HKG AUCTION
Items sold in HKG auctions are listed under Schedule II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Trade of such items for commercial purposes may be
allowed under strict licensing control.
No intention to intervene.
Auctions held properly under
convention guidelines and with strict licensing requirements imposed by HKG on potential buyers.
