as a business man or self-employed person, an

individual would be admitted to this country

provided he was willing to invest at least

£150,000 in a business in the UK which was

likely to create jobs. The income from the

business should be capable of supporting him

and his dependents without him having to take

alternative employment;

as someone with a high degree of skill and

experience, an individual may be eligible to come to this country to take a specific job, under

work permit arrangements operated by the Department

of Employment;

as someone with certain specialised manual skills

(eg as a cook) an individual may be eligible to

come to this country under a scheme for workers

from the Dependent Territories operated by the

Department of Employment. The current annual

quota for Hong Kong is 150;

there are cetain very limited categories of people (eg sole representatives of overseas firms) who

can come to this country to work without a work

permit.

Persons admitted to this country to work in each of the

four categories listed above can apply for settlement after

four years' residence in this country. Once settlement has

been granted there are of course no restrictions on employment.
