INTERVIEWER:
Foreign Secretary, there has been criticiem in Hong Kong that
some kind of commitment given by the British Government for direct
elections has been broken by this White Papur.
Vas any such commitment given and if not, what kind of
assurances were given?
FOREIGN BBCRETARY:
To auch commitment was given and the reports that were widely circulated this morning that some commitment was given and had been
broken are quite without foundation.
When the matter was lant; considered, we committed murselves to review the position fully in 1987 Lo see whether or not there was a case for direct elections and if so, when those direct elections - should be introduced. We fulfilled that commitment absolutely and we have announced today an important step forward with direct
elections to take place iu 1991.
