Visit to Hong Kong by HRH Princess Margaret

Topics of Conversation

The rapidly changing Hong Kong skyline and the

sheer pace of development are always good topics of

conversation.

Harbour Crossings

When HRH was last here in 1969, all Harbour

crossings were by ferry. In 1972, a road tunnel was opened between Hung Hom/Wanchai and in 1979 the

underground railway's first stage was brought into operation incorporating a cross harbour-rail link between

Central District and the prime tourist area of Tsim Sha

Tsui. Now a third crossing, a combined road and rail

link, is under construction in the Eastern Harbour area.

New Towns

The development of new towns in the New

Territories has seen quiet rural backwaters turned into

self contained cities almost overnight. For example Tuen

Mun which HRH will visit on Friday, 29th was 14 years ago

just a small rural settlement.

Today its population is

300,000 and is forecast to rise to 500,000 by 1990.
