A Council for the Performing Arts was established
in 1982 to advise Government on all matters concerning the
performing arts. The Hong Kong Academy for Performing
Arts which was officially opened by HRH the Duchess of
Kent in February 1986, was built on the Wanchai waterfront
as a jont venture between Government and the Royal Hong
Kong Jockey Club. The facilties provided are among the
best in the world. Upon full development in 1988/89, the
Academy will cater to 600 full-time students in dance,
music, drama and technical arts. In addition to being a
training institute, the Academy also has two magnificent
theatres with a combined seating capacity of 1,600 and an
open theatre for public performance purposes.
Built in 1977, the Hong Kong Arts Centre is aimed
at promoting local performances and public interest in the
arts. There are three auditoria and a visual arts gallery
in its 19-storey building. Other facilities including an
artist studio, music practice rooms, two art libraries, as
well as accommodation for other cultural and educational
organisations in Hong Kong.
For the purpose of encouraging music talent among
Hong Kong youth, the Music Office was set up by the
Government in 1977 to provide music training and
activities for young people. Its activities include the
