Cultural Developments
Hong Kong has made monumental strides in the
development of the cultural scene. In 1975, the City
Hall, with one Concert Hall and a theatre, was the only
cultural centre in Hong Kong. Today, there are nine
public performance venues with a total seating capacity of
12,000. In addition, the Queen Elizabeth Stadium
(capacity: 3,500) and the Hong Kong Coliseum (capacity :
12,500), which are multi-purpose stadia completed in 1980
and 1983 respectively, are also used regularly for
cultural performances.
At present, nine additional
cultural centres of different sizes and design are under
construction or being planned. These will boost the total
seating capacity to over 23,000 by 1990.
Over 2,000 cultural programmes are presented each
year (compared with 364 in 1975). Hong Kong also hosts
three annual major arts festivals: the Hong Kong Arts
Festival, the Asian Arts Festival, and the Hong Kong
International Film Festival.
