Madame Gu is the only women Governor of a Chinese
Province. She was born in Jiangsu in 1937 and is a
technical school graduate. She was central government
Vice-Minister (in the influential State Planning
Commission) before being appointed Governor of Jiangsu in
1983. She is a full member of the Party's Central
Committee.

Madame Gu's relative youth and economic experience
are qualities highly favoured at the present time. She
visited Japan in 1983 as a member of an economic and
friendship delegation.
