Member of the Politburo. Vice-President of the People's
Republic of China.
1. Ulanhu was born in 1906 in an area which is now part
of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. He is
Mongolian. Little is known of his early life. He joined
the Chinese Communist Party in 1925 and studied in the
Soviet Union between 1925 and 1930. On his return to
China he was active as a communist agitator and guerilla
leader against the Japanese. When the Inner Mongolia
Autonomous Region was first formed in 1947, Ulanhu became
its Head and was the senior figure in the region from
then until 1966 when he was disgraced in the Cultural
Revolution. For much of this time he also held Central
Party responsibilities in charge of policy towards
Chinese ethnic minorities.
