The

8. The very successful State Visit in October further

underlines the excellence of UK-China relations.

Queen and Prince Philip, who were accompanied by

Sir Geoffrey Howe, received a warm and enthusiastic

welcome from both the Chinese leadership and people.

There is a busy programme of high-level visits, but

British visitors to China outnumber Chinese visitors to

Britain. The Prime Minister visited in 1982 and 1984.

Lord Young has undertaken three trade missions since

1985. Mr Raison, Mr Renton, Mr Luce, Mr Lamont,

Mr Walden and Mr Spicer have visited China recently.

Premier Zhao Ziyang came to Britain in 1985; the Minister

of Foreign Relations and Trade, Zheng Tuobin, in May

1986; and the then General Secretary Hu Yaobang,

Vice-Premier Li Peng in June 1986; Minister for National

Defence Zhang Aiping in September 1986, and Jia Shi,

Chairman of the China Council for Promotion of

International Trade this month. In April this year

Mr Edward Heath MP made a private visit to China to

conduct the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Central

Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in Peking. The proceeds

of the Peking concert went to the Fund for the

Handicapped headed by Deng Xiaoping's crippled son,

Deng Pufang.
