5. During the State Visit, HM The Queen announced a
programme of Royal Fellowships to allow key Chinese
scientists to pursue post doctoral research in Britain.
There will be about 30 awards each year for three years.
The ODA will pay for 10 awards costing up to £100,000
each year, and the remaining awards will be financed by
British Industry and the Chinese Community in
Manchester.
6. A Development Loan Agreement for capital projects was
signed in May 1986 by the Chinese Minister for Foreign
Economic Relations and Trade, Zheng Tuobin, and
Sir Geoffrey Howe. It provides for soft loans repayable
at 5% over 20 years for development projects worth £300m.
The first contract to be supported under the Agreement
was signed on 12 April by British Shipbuilders who will
provide 2 large container vessels, with an option for a
third, to The China Ocean Shipping Company.
7. There is also a growing framework of bilateral
agreements (on economic cooperation, nuclear energy,
double taxation, and investment protection).
