Thank you for your letter of 8 December.

When my Private Secretary acknowledged your first

letter on 16 October he noted that the issues which you

have raised are serious ones, which will need the most

careful consideration. That consideration is proceeding.

You touched on two aspects of the Carrian trial, namely questions of law and the conduct of the presiding

judge. You will understand that the first aspect must be

a matter for the courts. The Attorney General of Hong Kong

referred to the Hong Kong Court of Appeal a number of points of law arising from the trial. Judgment on that reference was delivered by the Chief Justice on 19 November:

I enclose a copy. The other matters which you raise are being pursued, and I shall write to you again in due

course.
