TVE : Licensing of Television
Programme Rights
This is undertaken by HK-TVB International Ltd which sells to overseas television networks and video cassette rental operators. It also distributes television programmes produced by 3rd parties in S.E. Asia and acts as sales agent for a number of television stations -in China. One global problem affecting its video cassette business is that of pirate operators whose activities are not always within the jurisdiction of the courts as it depends on the legislation on copyrights in the country in which such practices occur. In 1983, its turnover of $34mn and net profit of $11mn represented 5% of Group turnover and 7% of Group net profit. We expect contributions from this subsidiary to increase substantially in 1984 and the coming years as the growing popularity of TVB's programmes is matched by effective demand from the Oriental communities
overseas.
