Thank you for your helpful letter of 22 January. Please accept my apologies for the incorrect byline in the last issue of the Monitor. Any future material supplied by the Hong Kong Government Office and to be reproduced in our publication will follow the guidelines that you suggest.
I was aware of the nature of Simon Winchester's original article in the Sunday Times and you will have noted that I edited out all references to the homeless, the night life, etc. On the other hand, when I visited Hong Kong last month I did find a certain amount of pessimism about the future on the part of some senior figures in Hong Kong. The rest were non-committal and were adopting a 'wait and see' approach.
