On the 27th of April this year another

English newspaper, "The Independent," published a major summary of the allegations and statements made in "Spycatcher".

And on

the same day two other English newspapers, "The London Evening Standard" and "The London Daily News," published reports of what

The Allorney moved against the had appeared in "The Independent",

publishers and editors of those newspapers for alleged contempt

of court.

Soon after publication by "The Independent"

"The Guardian and "The Observer" applied to discharge the injunctions against them on the ground that there had been significant changes in circumstances since the injunctions had been granted in 1986, and that in the circumstances it was no longer appropriate to continue the injunctions.

On the 2nd of June this year the Vice-Chancellor

in England decided a preliminary issue of law in the contempt proceedings. He held that such publication by "The Independent" and the other two newspapers could not amount to contempt of court because there was no injunction restraining publication by "The Independent" or any other newspaper apart from "The Guardian" and "The Observer", Subsequently, on the 15th of July, the Court of Appeal reversed that decision and that is how the law now stands, that is, such publication by a third newspaper can amount to

contempt.

"The Cunday Times," another and, I think,

probably wellknown English newspaper, purchased the British serialisation rights to "Spycatcher" and on the 12th of July this year published the first instalment of extracts from "Spycatcher", On the 14th of July Viking Penguin published
