FUTURE OF THE GARRISON
DEFENCE AND SECURITY OF HONG KONG
DSR 11C
The British garrison will be withdrawn by 30 June 1997.
Useful preliminary exchanges took place in the sixth
meeting of the Joint Liaison Group regarding the .
implementation of the Joint Declaration's provisions
relating to defence and public order in the Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region. Object of both sides in
these exchanges is to ensure a smooth transition of these
responsibilities in 1997.
BRITISH NATIONAL (OVERSEAS) PASSPORT
- Last October we began extensive campaign to explain
BN (0) status and its passport to third countries. Such
responses as we have received have been encouraging and
no country has said it will not recognise new status.
The exercise is continuing to ensure the new status is
fully understood by 1 July 1987, when passports endorsed
with this status will be introduced.
MACAU AGREEMENT
-
Welcome successful conclusion of negotiations on Macau.
Situation there not exactly same as that in Hong Kong,
and therefore there are some points of difference between
two agreements. But essential features the same.
This
is sensible and good for local confidence regarding the
future of both places.
