I enclose a copy of a telex I received recently from Derek Davies, Editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review in Hong Kong, expressing his fears with regard to legislation affecting the freedom of the Press in Hong Kong.
I certainly share Mr Davies' concern that the Hong Kong press should retain the freedom to which it has been accustomed and understand that a petition or letter of opposition to the amendment to the public order ordinance has already been signed by 50 members of the Hong Kong legal department.
I would be most grateful if you would let me know whether Her Majesty's Government is aware of this situation and, if so, whether it plans to use its influence with the Hong Kong Government to assuage the concern that these developments have produced.
