WEIGHTS AND MEASURES ORDINANCE 1987

This Ordinance provides comprehensively for

all matters relating to weights and measures, in replacement of the limited and out-dated provisions of the Weights and Measures Ordinance (Chapter 51) which is repealed. The principal objectives of the Ordinance are

to define units of measurement of length and weight in line with modern internationally accepted standards, so as to facilitate the orderly conduct of trade; and

to safeguard the interests of both traders and consumers by providing machinery to enforce the legislation.

This Ordinance is the first, in its Bill form, to have been drafted and Gazetted in both English and Chinese, though only the English text was intended for enactment. The Chinese version of the Bill is now being further scrutinised by members of OMELCO in contemplation of the project to introduce bilingual legislation.

Before the Governor assented to the Bill in the name and on behalf of Her Majesty, the Attorney General advised that he could properly do so.
