HONG KONG POLICE FORCE:

FUTURE PROSPECTS

The Police Force Council and the police staff side (in the latter case mainly expatriate) have expressed concern about the effect on the future employment and immigration prospects of members of the Force who continue to serve under the SAR after 1997. The specific questions are:

2.

(a) Would service with the SAR count as service

with a communist government which in many cases precludes an officer and his family members from getting a job in the UK, Commonwealth and some foreign countries?

(b) Would such service affect the chances of

such officers and dependents being accepted for immigration to Commonwealth countries. A particular point of concern relates to the position of children who would have been brought up and educated in the SAR.

I should be grateful for any advice you can give. It is obviously difficult to forecast the attitude of other governments but my own view is that there is a strong case for HMG adopting (and discreetly making known) an understanding that Hong Kong police officers (expatriate or local) would not be rejected for employment in a UK police force
