Thank you for your letter of 19 December about Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong. Of the 500 refugees to whom I referred in my letter of 6 August, those from Hong Kong (some 478) have now all arrived in the UK.
understand that the UK voluntary agencies concerned are in touch with the Home Office on the resettlement of a further group of 60 refugees from elsewhere in SE Asia. Now that we have completed the resettlement programme for Vietnamese refugees from Hong Kong announced in 1985 we are considering, as we said in our White Paper that we would do, whether we might accept a further limited number from Hong Kong. A decision on this will be announced as soon as possible.
You refer in your letter to the rehabilitation of refugees, and to the interest of the Ulster Committee to assist if possible. Since the rehabilitation of refugees is a matter for the Home Office, I am passing a copy of your letter to David Waddington so that he can answer your question.
