(a) for officers under the age of 50, 5

years as from 1 July 1987 or until their 50th birthday, whichever is the earlier, subject to a minimum period of 2 years;

for officers between the age of 50 and 55, 2 years from 1 July 1987 or until the day before their 55th birthday, whichever is the earlier (but see paragraph 10 below);

for officers other than Disciplined Services staff who are serving on extension of service beyond the age of 55 on 1 July 1987, before the expiry of their current extensions (but see paragraph 10 below); and

for Disciplined Services staff who are serving on extension of service beyond the retirement age prescribed by their Heads of Departments under NPS, 6 months as from 1 July 1987 or the expiry of their current extension, whichever is the earlier.

Options for the NPS must be made while the officer is in service. In order to allow time for officers who will leave the service shortly after 1 July 1987 to consider and to exercise their options, where possible, the following arrangements will be made -

(a) an officer whose 55th birthday or expiry of his current extension of service falls between 1 July and 30 September 1987 and who has not proceeded on pre-retirement leave may be granted a short extension of service (subject to service needs and the officer's physical fitness) or a period of no pay leave upon expiry of his accrued leave up to 30 September 1987 by which date they will have to decide on whether to join the NPS;

(b)

an officer who has proceeded on pre-retirement or pre-resignation leave which expires in July 1987 may exercise his option at the latest by 31 July 1987; any period between the original expiry date of his pre-retirement/ pre-resignation leave and the date of his option will be deemed as no-pay leave, and his retirement/resignation
