From The Minister of State

18 November 1987

Year Johm,

Thank you for copying to me your letter of

4 November to Tim Renton about the Dependent Territories Quota.

The political reasons for retaining the Quota at its existing level remain valid. I therefore agree with your proposal that the present quota of 200 permits should be carried forward into 1988. I am content with the draft written Parliamentary Question and Answer.

In the light of the heavy demand for catering staff from Hong Kong we continue to see a case for relaxing the limit of 150 permits for any one Dependent Territory. But I accept that there should be no changes to the scheme until after the review has been completed.

In view of our interest in this matter I would be grateful if Tim Renton, to whom I am copying this letter, could keep me informed of any developments on the review.
