The Prospects of Nuclear Power in View of Chernobyl
Lecture at Fudan University, Shanghai.
9 September 1987

I have been asked to talk about the prospects of nuclear power in
the world, particularly in view of the serious power reactor accident
which occured at the Chernobyl plant in the Soviet Union in April last
year. The future of nuclear power is, however, intimately coupled with
The wald the question of whether we will need more energy, and in particular more
electricity, which is and will remain the primary product of nuclear
energy.
The use of electricity per capita is one of the indicators for the
stage of development of a society and in the present world situation
there are very large differences between countries and regions. To
mention some examples: the world's highest per capita consumption is in
Norway, with 25 000 kwh/person and year; in Sweden that figure is 15 000
and in France 6 400. There are thus large differences among the
industrialized countries.
