Present Status and Prospects of Nuclear Power in the World
Hans Blix
Director General
International Atomic Energy Agency
Sixth Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference Beijing, China
8 September 1987
Mr. President of the Conference, Ladies and Gentlemen:
08-07
I am happy to address the Sixth Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference in
this opening ceremony on the subject of the present status and prospects
of nuclear power in the world.
Although the world is shrinking in the sense that different parts
are not many hours apart, it is still a very heterogeneous world. No
part is spared economic problems, but one of the most encouraging and
impressive developments is to be seen in this part of the Pacific Basin.
It is not that this area of the world is free from problems, but it is in
large measure an area of very rapid economic and perhaps I should add,
political
--
growth. It has reason to be optimistic, and the rest of the
world has reason to congratulate it on its achievements.
Economic health
anywhere is welcome everywhere.
