2.

Pending immigration clearance, Dr. Blix briefly

discussed with Miss Tam his impression of his recent visit

to China. Dr. Blix said that he had had a very tight visit programme he attended the Sixth Pacific Basin Nuclear

Conference in Beijing, visited the Qinshan Nuclear Power

Plant in Zhejiang Province, gave a lecture at Fudan

University in Shanghai, visited various Chinese nuclear

research centres and held discussions with senior Chinese

officials including Premier Zhao Ziyang and Vice-Premier

Li Peng. Dr. Blix also provided Miss Tam a copy of his

address at the opening ceremony of the Sixth Pacific

Basin Nuclear Conference (Annex A) and his lecture at Fu an

University (Annex B).

3.

Dr. Blix noted that his official engagements in

Hong Kong would include a meeting with the Secretary for

Economic Services, Mrs. Anson Chan, and a briefing session

with the LegCo Ad Hoc Group on the Daya Bay Nuclear Power

Plant. He understood that Hong Kong's concern was with the

safety of the Daya Bay project. Dr. Blix said that he did

not visit Daya Bay during his stay in China, but was given

to understand that the Daya Bay plant would comprise two

900 MW pressurised water reactors manufactured by

Framatome.

The reactors were modelled after the standard

900 MW French reactors which were widely used in the

western countries.
