As at 31st December, 1986, the Commis-
sioner had under his supervision 151 licensed banks, an increase of 8 during the year. Of these only 35
were incorporated in Hong Kong. Fifteen of the 35
Hong Kong banks are foreign owned or controlled and
a further 3 have foreign equity participation.
Three banks are very small, unincorporated partner-
ships.
Another 3 banks of varying sizes are presently owned by the Government. Of the remaining 11, 4 licences are connected with the Hong kong and
Shanghai Bank and the Hang Seng Bank and the other 7
are held by independent groups. (Tables 1-3).

The geographical interest is widespread. 64 banks with branches or subsidiaries in Hong Kong are from Asia and the Pacific including 25 Japanese, 15 Chinese, 5 from Singapore and 4 Australian.
