From the adviser's report on the prison industry, he has stressed the importance of confidence among the
Government departments that the CSI products quality should equal
that supplied by the outside market, and that the Government by reasonable coercion, if necessary, encourage departments to use CSI products. Has this actually been done, both quality wise and
7 trying your best to persuade the other departments to use your
products?

Well, as I said sir earlier we had a major

drive on quality and we diverted staff resources to this end. I
think many of our products now can be compared with products made in
the middle market range with outside factories. Regarding the
resistance, our officers do go to Government departments and they do
speak to the officers responsible for procuring items, they do show them samples. We give them samples to test and report back to us.
17 Many of the comments we receive back are now favourable. Recently
18 we made shirts for the women P.C.s and I think they found them 100%
acceptable. There was some resistance years ago and I think we have
overcome the quality problem now.

Could I add one point to that, correct me garments alone and other textile items, Correctional
Services Department is producing for 20 Government departments. And as
I understand it, you have about three quarters of the Government demand for these items.
