Mr Chairman, I just want to ask the DFS
on the steering groups' work, do you work it in conjunction with
3 the LAFIS system that we have?

DFS:
The LAFIS would certainly be used where-
ever its data was useful. I think we would find that the Finance
7 Branch staff would in many cases find it useful, yes.

MR CHEONG:
Now you mentioned 32 groups is going to
be set up, do you have any targets or sort of, in the order of significance that you wish to go into in terms of identifying major
12 areas where possible savings can be - can possibly occur?

DFS:
I don't think that we should assume that
we will have the same sort of studies going on in each department. I mean, I think the departments vary one from another very much. I haven't been briefed on that particular point, but I would be surprised if we do not approach it on the basis of making sure that we establish
steering groups early in those departments where it is our impresssion
that there are opportunities to be found for making savings. This perhaps, you will notice that when I read out those, the savings we
22 have achieved which I should have said were between the dates October
23 '85 and May '86 so that they update it a bit, those figures that I 24 gave were only for just over a six month period, and some of them 25 involve departments with pretty large numbers of staff; very large 26 number, for example, of staff in the Housing Department and in the
Urban Services Department.

MR CHEONG:
I presume your steering groups will continue to operate in the various departments where savings have already been
found.
DFS:
Yes indeed.
MR CHEONG:
And I presume also that although you have
not yet been briefed as to the order of priorities, you could supply
