Recent Developments

In addition to the three very visible Chinese entrepreneurs mentioned, there is no doubt that there is a growing trend for local Chinese to increase their holdings in locally listed companies. New listings of companies controlled by local Chinese since 1985 include National Electrics (Consolidator) Limited, Furama Hotel Enterprises Limited, Kader Industrial Company Limited, Video Technology International (Holdings) Limited, Cafe de Coral Group Limited, Jademan (Holdings) Limited, Luks Industrial Company Limited, K Wah Stones (Holdings) Limited, Novel Enterprises Limited, Laws Fashion Knitters Limited and Hong Kong Resort Company Limited.

An increasing PRC presence is also becoming apparent. Companies with PRC influence now listed in the Hong Kong market includes Tien An China Investments Company Limited (in which China Resources (Holdings) Company Limited has an indirect interest), Union Globe Development Limited (an indirect subsidiary of Guangdong Enterprises (Holdings) Limited) and Wah Shing Toys Consolidated Limited (to be listed shortly) (a principal and shareholder being Yu Xiu Enterprises Limited (37.5%)).

Australian and New Zealand interests have also sought to establish a public presence in Hong Kong. In 1985 Shanghai Dockyards Limited was acquired by Industrial Equity Limited, an Australian listed company. In 1985 Sing Tao Newspapers Limited was acquired by Impala Pacific Corporation of Australia. We have also seen the listing of City Resources (Asia) Limited, Sunshine Pacific Limited and Crusader Investments Limited, all with Australian financers on the board.

From New Zealand, we have seen at least three companies seeking a listing in Hong Kong. Equiticorp Holdings Limited acquired the listing of Chuang's Properties Limited in late 1986. In 1986/87, Paladin International Limited obtained a listing through the takeover of JF Special Holdings Limited. Rainbow Orient Corporation Limited was also listed through the acquisition of Dah Yuen Real Estate Company Limited.
