In 1985, Wharf acquired 100% control of Wheelock Marden and Company Limited, formerly a British "Hong" controlled by the Marden family and its associates. Consequently, Wheelock's subsidiaries which include Hong Kong Realty & Trust Company Limited, Realty Development Corporation Limited, Harriman Holdings Limited, Lane Crawford Holdings Limited and Allied Investors Corporation Limited came under the control of Sir Yue-kong Pao.

In 1978, Mr Lee Shau-kee, Chairman of several local properties companies including Henderson Development Limited, Henderson Land Development Company Limited and Wing Tai Development Company Limited, held 1.78 million shares representing 10.7% of the issued shares of the Hong Kong & China Gas Company Limited.

The Gas Company had been under the control of the Marden family and its associates since 1950s. As at the end of December 1986, Mr Lee Shau-kee held 83 million shares representing about 25.6% of the issued capital of the Company and has been Chairman since 1983.

Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry Company Limited was founded by a local Chinese family, the Lau family. Mr Lau Chan-kwok is currently Chairman. In 1981, Mr Lee Shau-kee, Chairman of Henderson Development Company, Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited and Wing Tai Development Company Limited acquired 32% of the issued capital of the Ferry Company and Mr Lau has been a director of the Company since then.
