Jimmy McGregor, Director of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, has written to us about this symposium. This is the second in a pretty major series of which the first took place in Perth, Western Australia in November 1986. I enclose a copy of McGregor's letter of 28 September with attachments.
As you see, the organisers are hoping to get agreement from the Secretary of State to send a satellite message on the first day of the symposium. We have simply advised him to approach the Secretary of State direct. If he does so, I hope that you would be able to recommend that the Secretary of State agree. The event is a pretty high-powered one in which a number of major figures are likely to take part. At the Perth event the Prime Minister of Australia sent a message and they also got one from Mr Reagan. As indicated in McGregor's letter, the Governor has indeed agreed to attend the opening, subject to other engagements.
