In 1986 the Western Australian Development Corporation staged a major symposium on international trade and finance to stimulate interest in Australia's role in the Pacific Rim region.

The symposium, PacRim 86, was extremely successful and demonstrated beyond doubt a capability to make a significant contribution to the development of the region. It was therefore decided to continue the concept and PacRim 88 will be held in Hong Kong from 4th-7th December, 1988.
The high rate of economic growth in the Pacific Rim countries guarantees that the region will play an increasingly important role on the world stage. PacRim's function in identifying growth areas and creating a forum for leaders from industry and government and the public sector to meet and discuss opportunities, can only accelerate this process.
It is considered appropriate that Hong Kong's role in the Asia-Pacific region be recognised and that the island should be selected as the first offshore venue for a PacRim symposium.
However, the symposium could not possibly achieve its objectives without a broad presentation, at the highest level, of the European perspective of the emerging Pacific region. On behalf of the organisers I extend to you an invitation to be a keynote speaker at PacRim 88's opening session on Monday, 5 December 1988.
