Mr. Yang told Mr. Clift that in April this year the
Chinese would sign an agreement with Gordon Wu on the super
highway. Work would start shortly thereafter with completion
scheduled for 1992. The first section to be constructed was
that between Hong Kong and Guangzhou.

Being
The double-tracking of the railway between Shenzhen to
Guangzhou was nearly complete. Between Guangzhou and Hengyang
in Hunan double-tracking was difficult because of the eleven
kilometre tunnel required through the Da Yan mountain.
single-tracked along this section meant that the railway
blocked cargo to and from Guangzhou, which affected the
economic development of the city. Once the double-tracking
between Guangzhou and Maoming was completed Guangzhou would be
fully hooked up with the National railway network.

As for air links, two things were being done:
military airfields were being converted for civilian use and
the monopoly of CAAC was being broken. Shaoguan, Meixian, Fo
Shan, Shantou, Haikou (Hainan) and Lingshun (Hainan) were
military airfields which now took Boeing 737's. Nan Fang
) Air Company would be set up to control and manage
air links in Guangzhou.

Mr. Clift asked whether Mr. Yang saw any need to
expand or replace Guangzhou airport. Mr. Yang replied that
Guangzhou airport was extremely busy and located very near
