Mr Clift thanked Mr Zhang for the warm reception
given. Hong Kong and Shenzhen were close neighbours and he
regarded this as an added reason to keep in touch. He said he
looked forward to the continuation of the close relationship
between the two sides which had been established by his
predecessor.

Mr Zhang agreed that the links between the two were
close. In 1986, 12 million people had passed through Lo Wu and
an average 8,000 vehicles per day had crossed the border at Man
Kam To. This showed that economic cooperation would continue
to strengthen.
