will be required. The Government has undertaken substantial studies
on the
feasibility of building a replacement airport at Chek Lap Kok, to the north of
Lantau. There have been extensive studies On the engineering and technical
aspects, particularly the aviation and aeronautical requirements. A master
plan for the airport site is, very largely, ready.

to
There is also a possibility of a replacement airport site in East
Lantau, as an alternative to Chek Lap Kok. The Government will shortly
commence a second consultancy study to update the data previously collected on
Chek Lap Kok and to investigate the feasibility of the alternative site in East Lantau, from an aviation point of view. This study is expected commence in early 1988, for completion by mic 1989. From aviation aspect the
following points need to be considered in the selection of possible replacement airport sites: runway configurations and flight paths, height
restrictions on nearby developments, and environmental impact, particularly
noise. With the completion of new roads in the New Territories, either the
Chek Lap Kok or the East Lantau site would only be about 20 minutes ride from
Shenzhen.

The Government feels there is a need to ersure that airport
developments in both sides are compatible in operational terms, e.g. по
conflicting flight paths, and that possible environmental impacts on both
sides are taken into account. Το take account of each other's airport
proposals, more exchange of information would be useful, and I look forward to
follow-up discussions in this ares. For Hong Kong's side, the two airport
studies which I have described should provide the Government with more
information on which a decision could be made as to when and where to build a
replacement airport in Hong Kong.
